Jerry Uhlman’s Bio

Author and nature writer Jerry Uhlman is an inveterate traveler who has trekked through North America’s Arctic tundra, southwest deserts, prairie grasslands, boreal forests and swampy pocosin wetlands in search of adventure and avian specialties.

Wanderlust and curiosity about birdlife have taken him to Costa Rica, Mexico, Trinidad, Ecuador, Russia, northern India, and West Africa’s Ivory Coast. His North American lifelist approaches 650 and world list is nearly 1450.

He has written about his adventures and journeys for a decade and tales of his treks have appeared in various birding magazines, including the American Birding Association’s Birding and Winging It publications, Bird Watcher’s Digest, WildBird Magazine, Birder’s World, National Geographic Birdwatcher, Living Bird, Blue Ridge Country and Virginia Wildlife.

Uhlman writes Flyways & Byways, a popular feature in the Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper that captures the pleasure and excitement of birding in our own backyards, as well as far-flung corners of the world. The lively and colorful column has appeared monthly since 1998 and celebrates avian behavior, conservation endeavors, astounding migratory journeys and discovery of unheralded hotspots along America’s flyways and distant byways. Flyways & Byways can be found in the Flair Section of the newspaper the third Sunday of each month, usually located behind the brides(!).

Originally reared in the Pacific Northwest, Uhlman has made Virginia his home for the past three decades. He received a bachelor’s degree at Portland State University, master’s degrees at Wayne State University and the University of Pittsburgh, and a doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh. Before becoming an avid birder, he squandered most of his adult life laboring in the healthcare administration arena. He currently resides in Richmond, Virginia with his spouse, Sylvia, and loyal corgi pooch, Paddington (Paddy, for short).

This web site offers birders and wildlife-watchers the first opportunity to acquire a collection of “Flyways & Byways” newspaper columns as well as several books of magazine articles written by an avid birder who truly enjoys travelin’ to see the birds — Jerry Uhlman, driven to explore and discover birds on most any flyway or byway.
